This professional certification course for individuals with an initial teaching certification focuses on literacy instruction for racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse literacy learners from birth to grade 2 and literacy intervention for those experiencing reading difficulties. Topics addressed include diverse language and literacy practices, including translanguaging; oral language and vocabulary development; text comprehension; print concepts; phonological awareness; alphabet and sound-spelling knowledge; decoding and sight word knowledge; fluency; and writing.
