The course invokes the concept of the amphibious to describe intertwined lives of humans, animals, and plants in river landscapes. Focusing on preindustrial river ecosystems, we examine how floods, local knowledge, technology, agriculture, commerce, and human and nonhuman activities continually transformed waterscapes. Topics include how societies lived with floods, how rice cultivation reshaped landscapes, and how dams and watermills altered river flows. We also explore how beavers transformed waterways, the roles of fish in river ecosystems, and the importance of willow planting. Drawing on four Eastern European rivers, the course connects local transformations to broader questions in global environmental history.
