GEOG 103 explores the historical and contemporary geography of multicultural America. Throughout the course, we examine the experiences and geographic patterns of several major groups, including white European, Latino, Asian, and Black Americans, and consider how those patterns have changed over time. Using geography as our lens, we explore migration and settlement, neighborhoods and communities, economic opportunity, inequality, and the ways social institutions and the political economy influence where people live and the opportunities available to them. A central question runs throughout the course: How do social institutions, the political economy, and differences in opportunity affect where and how well people live? The course is designed for both Geography majors and students from across the University. No previous Geography coursework is required. There is no textbook to purchase. All readings, videos, maps, and other required course materials are provided through Brightspace.
