Analyzing Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Czech, and East German films from a variety of genres as case studies, we will attempt to trace the complex, often contradictory forms of femininity that emerged in the socialist imaginary at specific points in history, considering how these forms relate to different political systems, both in theory and in practice. In addition to key terms from film theory, we will cover tropes like defeminization, the new woman, and the mother-heroine. We will look not only at positive representations of the socialist woman, but also critiques of women's lives under socialism, as well as compare socialist femininities with their capitalist counterparts. While the primary course content is cinema, weekly films will be supplemented by short scholarly articles and artifacts such as posters or newspaper clippings.
