Selected topics courses are regularly scheduled courses that focus on a particular topic of interest. Descriptions are printed in the Schedule of Classes each semester. Selected topics courses may be used as elective credit and may be repeated for credit, provided that the topic of the course changes. This course is for everyone, and thats because we will all encounter disability at one point in our lives, either in loved ones, community or in our own lived experience. We will interrogate the bodymind norms of the world around us utilizing theories, tools and tactics from Feminist Disability Studies. We will look at the emergence of the field, think critically about how oppressive structures and social constructions create the problematic dialectic of disabled / ablebodied, and think about queer and trans alternatives. We will examine historical and current conversations around bodily autonomy, self-expression and the socio-political factors that affect representation of and for disabled people. This course will involve creative projects and responses to the important work of the crip community, examining the life saving practice of interdependence and will utilize a variety of media--from movies, to podcasts, fashion interventions and artistic projects.
