What writes poetry? As AI proliferates, we'll explore the long history of poets using constraints and automation to generate new writing, from stochastic computer texts to search engines algorithms, from code poetry to poetry written with or by chatbots. We'll develop a sense of how prompts shape creativity, and consider the developing field of "prompt engineering," which links creative practice not just to what we make but how we create the conditions for what we make. We'll consider the role of the human alongside the role of computation, procedure, 'found' words, cultural conventions, and more, in order to complicate both the idea of "AI poetry" and the "genius" of the poet.
