Take your class online with SUNY

You will learn the same curriculum as our on-campus students

In this course, we will apply interdisciplinary methodologies derived from ethnomusicology and music education to examine and compare systems of music teaching and learning within diverse cultural groups, social structures, and political-economic settings. We will learn about the activities and pedagogies of non-western traditional music, in addition to exploring how Western music itself has been reconceptualized and taught through Non-Western perspectives. We will also explore global music cultures of children, world music in the multicultural curriculum, and cultural diversity in schooling. To these topics we shall apply theoretical frameworks of gender, identity, ethnicity, patriotism, and democracy––the emergent issues which are embedded in and which complicate music teaching and learning around the world.
