This course is designed to help pre-service teachers understand and define the various components of a “balanced” literacy program for children in grades 1-6. Using quality children’s literature, pre-service teachers will be expected to design and implement balanced literacy instruction in a classroom setting. Pre-service teachers will also be expected to use various forms of assessment to measure the success of their instruction as well as individual progress in literacy development.
