Take your class online with SUNY
You will learn the same curriculum as our on-campus students
Apart from the advanced content learned in graduate school are the set of professional skills that one learns along the way. What qualifies as a good abstract or paper? How does one navigate the academic or non-academic worlds? How does a linguist market her/himself and how do they manage successes and failures along the way? This course is designed to address questions like these in two important ways. First, the course will advise students on writing, presenting, and many of the other skills necessary to build a successful career as a linguist. Second, the course will serve as an open space to discuss concerns within these areas in an open forum. These things will be accomplished through in-class discussion and dialogue, conversations with invited speakers, and peer-to-peer evaluations of academic and professional documents. As a capstone, students will be expected to present a talk on their research at the end of the semester.
