Study of literature as means of understanding the narratives of American history, the development of common institutions in American society, how these institutions have affected different groups, and America's evolving relationship with the rest of the world. Although emphasis will vary, each offering will cover at least a 150-year period and will include aboriginal concerns, immigration, inequality, growth, colonialism, the environment, individual responsibility, issues of power and conflict, and the relationship between history and literature. As needed.
