Catalog Course Description
This course includes study of the mental, emotional and social development of the child through adolescence. The course stresses new modes of understanding and communication between adult and child, and explores gender differences in children's social interactions and approach to the world.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate understanding of historical and current views/theories of development in the field of child psychology.
2. Communicate knowledge of the general principles of child/adolescent behavior including growth and development, gender role, emotional process, temperament, family relationships, communication styles, attachments, transitions, learning and personality.
3. Describe the physical/cognitive/social and emotional development from birth to adolescence.
4. Compare and contrast the extent to which developmental outcomes are influenced by different cultural realities.
5. Discuss the impact of environmental hazards and the consequences for the child, both before and after birth.
6. Show comprehension of the impact of changing social trends on childhood and adolescence.
