This course explores literary works (poetry, fiction and drama) from the late-nineteenth century to the present which offer portraits of traditional and nontraditional families. Our discussions and a final essay will examine the literature's purposes, rhetorical features, levels of meaning, structure, language conventionality and clarity, and the theme of the individual within the family.
