This is an introduction to the core concepts of molecular biology with an emphasis on biotechnology and genetic engineering. The course covers a detailed analysis of the biochemical mechanisms that control the maintenance, regulation of expression, and evolution of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes. The topics covered include DNA replication, repair, recombination, transcription, and translation of nucleic acids. The logic of experimental design and data analysis is emphasized in regard to bacterial culture techniques, DNA extraction, restriction enzymes, agarose gel electrophoresis, DNA sequencing, protein purification, molecular cloning, and identification of biomolecules by SDS-PAGE, PCR, and enzyme assay.
