History of American Popular Music explores popular music from eighteenth century colonial America to the present. The course includes a survey of American popular music genres, including popular song, musical theater, ragtime, blues, jazz, folk music, country music, and rock and roll. Emphasis will be placed on the development of analytical listening skills, written analysis, and on understanding the many different genres of American popular music by studying representative literature, composers, and artists. Prerequisite: None. 3 cr. 3 Lec.
