This course explores the representation of close emotional male bonds in popular Bombay cinema. We will note how the genre of buddy film has received significant scholarly attention in its theorization of buddy-bromance dynamics. We will explore the significance of going beyond the homoerotic and homophobic aspects and focus on interpretations of these homosocial bonds characterized by love, loyalty, and acts of sacrifice. Here, we look at key developments from the 1970s to the present-day and examine subsequent iterations of the buddy film in contemporary Hindi cinema, which was increasingly impacted by the culture of liberalization and the expression of individual desire. Thereafter, we consider: Within the larger world of Bollywood, is female friendship underrepresented? How so? To answer these questions, we will watch films that portray female friendship, feminine desire, and female queer subjectivity.
