Coppola’s The Godfather is widely considered as one greatest films of all times. This course takes The Godfather film series as a central pivot to study the gangster film as a global genre. We will watch and discuss early Hollywood mob films like Angels With Dirty Faces and Scarface, as well as recent transformations of the genre on film and TV—think of Tarantino, The Sopranos, or The Wire. The course also includes comparisons with gangster films from other great cinematic traditions, such as the Japanese Yakuza, French new wave crime films, and depictions of the Indian underworld. The course tops off with an exploration of transnational films portraying globally organized crime syndicates, such as Slumdog Millionaire. The course thus combines the study of developments in organized crime and in cinema history.
