Taylor Swift is a feminist icon, a symbol of resistance, a pop sensation, and recently a global cultural phenomenon. This course will analyze the cultural, social, political, and economical influence of Taylor Swift before and after her move from a country artist to a popstar. We will closely read some of TS’ songs including music from her newly released “From the Vault” song and analyze how her re-recording process raises questions about intellectual property rights. By analyzing her documentary “Miss Americana” students will learn about fourth wave feminism and the role of race and gender in politics. Swift’s songs are not just entertaining, they also memorialize loss, celebrate culture, questions patriarchy, and does work of activism. Therefore, students will be asked to bring in their favorite TS song and analyze it using the history and background of the song, its social media presence, and the cultural and social significance and impact of the son
