In this course, we will watch several South Asian films with a focus on three major themes: identity politics; class, caste, gender, and sexuality; and neoliberal modernization. For example, whereas a film like In the Name of God (2007) may help us understand Pakistan in the post-9/11 context, other films like Kannathil Muthamittal (2002) may show us how majoritarian identity politics can become a source of intrastate violence in Sri Lanka. Similarly, films dealing with issues of class, caste, gender, and sexuality—e.g., Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (2007) or Joyland (2022)—also vocalize some key challenges that contemporary South Asia must overcome to achieve social harmony. We will also focus on the challenges posed by various neoliberal socio-economic changes as shown in films like Television (2012) or The White Tiger (2021), where we will often find individuals struggling hard to cope with the rapidly changing social dynamics.
