This course explores the dynamic relationships between hip-hop and gender, sexuality, race, and social issues, through music, films, lyrics, and new media. Hip-hop, known as street music, continues to transcend its musical origins and exert its own influence on many aspects of American culture. Since its birth in Brooklyn nearly 40 years ago, hip-hop has continued trending in most areas of pop culture, from fashion to movies, celebrities, and sports, becoming a cultural movement in its own right. This course also expands the scope of hip-hop as a “culture” beyond hip-hop as a “genre.” After examining the historical flow (from Dr. Dre to Kendrick Lamar) of how hip-hop achieved its cultural status in the US, we focus on how hip-hop influences other genres like film, fashion, dance, and the creation of new words. Some of the questions this course considers include the following: What is the “spirit” of hip-hop? How are gender, race, and sexuality expre
