Throughout the 20th century, revolutionary movements were often spaces conducive for women’s empowerment. Especially in armed struggles, though not exclusively, women would transgress traditional gender roles by picking up weapons, taking on positions of leadership, and equally sharing in household chores with their male comrades. More often than not, however, women would see their newly gained roles and freedoms rolled back once the struggle was over or once it entered a state-building phase. In this course, we will study women’s participation in revolutionary movements, looking in particular at what factors created openings for women’s empowerment; why and how revolutionary movements promoted women’s liberation; and what led to the reversal of women’s gains. We will also look at the examples of revolutionary movements in which women were able to secure their rights and freedoms and try to understand factors behind their success.
