This course offers a comprehensive examination of the prison abolition alongside the creation of alternatives. Drawing from a diverse range of sources, including works by Angela Davis, Ruth Wilson Gilmore and insights from activists and scholars, this course critically analyzes foundations, principles, and potential impact of prison abolition in the U.S. Throughout the course, students will delve into the historical, political, and economic roots of the prison system with a particular focus on its racial and gender disparities, while exploring its evolution into mass incarceration. This course aims to equip students with the critical thinking skills to question the current punitive paradigm and actively explore alternative solutions. By exploring transformative justice, restorative justice, and community-based alternatives, students will forge a path towards a society that seeks to move beyond incarceration and toward a more just and equitable society.
