Take your class online with SUNY
You will learn the same curriculum as our on-campus students
This course is an introduction to the contemporary visual culture of Pakistan. We will watch films (with English subtitles where needed) like Khuda Kay Liye/In the Name of God (2007), The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012), Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 (2018), Teefa in Trouble (2018), The Legend of Maula Jatt (2022), and Joyland (2022). We will also review representative artwork by Mahwish Chishti, Waseem Ahmed, and Faiza Butt. Through these texts the course reflects on the following and related questions: What constitutes Pakistani culture? What complexities and contradictions does it hold? What human values does it promote or challenge? How do these texts represent or complicate the concepts of gender, sexuality, identity, patriarchy, family, love, and religion. And finally, how does Pakistani culture respond to 9/11 and the Global War on Terror? By the end of the course the students will critically and theoretically evaluate major themes in the visual culture of Pakistan.
