This course will study representations of apocalypse and climatological catastrophe. Beginning with movies such as The Road. The course will highlight the central themes of the apocalyptic genre such as unconventional time frames, sense of immediacy and anticipated doom of mankind. By looking closely at the genre of the Apocalyptic, the course will raise pertinent questions, primarily that of hope and hopelessness. Movies such as Interstellar, become important in this regard as they offer hope, but in their unique ways. The course will also look at important theoretical strands surrounding environmental changes and their significance.
