You will learn the same curriculum as our on-campus students
In this course, we will examine the genre of the horror movie as a critique of capitalism. We will look at subgenres like social horror, folk horror and eat-the-rich films, as well as monstrous figures like zombies and vampires. We will consider how horror films respond to, allude to and critique the dynamics of modern capitalism, as well as how they engage with themes of poverty, gentrification, wealth, class mobility, globalization and economic and racial oppression. Some films we may discuss include American Psycho (2000), Dawn of the Dead (2004), Get Out (2017), Parasite (2019), and Candyman (2021). We will also engage with a range of interdisciplinary scholarship, including Marxist and postcolonial theory, to unpack the horror genre’s cultural, ideological and aesthetic implications. This course is asynchronous and the final grade will be determined by weekly discussion post participation and a final paper.
