Take your class online with SUNY
You will learn the same curriculum as our on-campus students
In this course, students will learn the basic concepts and teachings of several Asian traditions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Daoism. In this five-week summer course, we will engage in discussing philosophical problems that can still be contemplated today, such as the existence of God, the ultimate nature of reality, and how to ethically conduct oneself. Readings for the course will consist of some scriptural texts, and the works of Asian philosophers including Śaṅkara, Vasubandhu, Mencius, Zhuangzi, and Xunzi. We will also engage with a text by a modern Indian philosopher, Jiddu Krishnamurti. Pedagogically speaking, this course aims to teach students how to engage in philosophical debates via discussion and by writing argumentative papers. This course has no prerequisites.
