This course explores the history that sparked the creation of art and architecture in the Ottoman Empire as it relates to the Roman and Byzantine Empires before it and the rise of the Turkish Republic after it. Students will practice visual analysis through form, iconography, and historical context to gain insight into the social, economic, political, and religious dynamics during the Ottoman period. At the same time, through an examination of primary source material including letters, edicts, treatises, personal journals, and maps, students will study the establishment of the culture, systems, and institution of the Sultanate as they relate to the development of distinct features in the dynastic artistic style of the Ottomans. Running through the course is a discussion on the patronage practices of the Ottomans in terms of their motives (power, piety, pedagogy, and pleasure) and strategies for commissioning art and architecture.
