Introduces the four major traditions – spatial, man-land, area studies and earth-science – and the four principle divisions – physical geography, human geography, systematic geography and regional geography – of the discipline of geography; as well as the tools used by geographers. Provides a geographical analysis of the distinctive attributes of the populations, cultures (languages, religions), environments, resources, political structures and economies of the world. Issues of global importance, including development, demographic change, urbanization, migration, environmental problems and international conflict, are explored. Issues are examined by comparing and contrasting the experiences of core regions, such as Europe and the United States, to other world regions. Students in this lecture and activity sections course will be evaluated using examinations and written weekly assignments.
