We all experience stress, but in biological anthropology stress is defined as threats to an organism’s survival and well-being. Humans have evolved to feel stress as a response to changes in environmental conditions. How we respond to stress can have severe physiological and psychological impacts on all of us. This course focuses on the biological and health effects of stress. Topics include the history of the stress concept, the hormones involved, how they get measured and how they change in everyday life, the immunological responses to stress, chronic disease risk, and determining whether stress responses can be adaptive or pathological. These topics convey how psychosocial and physical stressors “get under the skin” (i.e., become embodied physiologically) and can lead to disease. As part of the instructor's own research, we will also cover how stress and breastfeeding interact to affect maternal and infant outcomes
