The purpose of this course is to explore some of the key moments in the early eugenics movement in the United States. Course themes include: Disability, Immigration, Race/Ethnicity, Class, Education/Intelligence, Religion, Law, and Popular Culture. We will discuss the effects of eugenics on people with disabilities, on immigration, and on ethnic/racial minorities during the first several decades of the 1900s. You will learn the origins of eugenics in the United States, examine the influence this movement had on U.S. law, and consider the historical ramifications of eugenicist thinking on later generations. Our time frame is mostly from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s.
