The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the major dynamics and discussions of the region and help them develop a critical gaze toward a highly contested academic domain. Topics include modernization movements across the Middle East, colonialist intervention, decolonization, post-colonial national histories and the emergence of a new state system, the history of oil, the Arab-Israeli conflict, the rise of political Islam, the Arab Spring, and US presence in the region.
