Reproducing sexually is costly in evolutionary terms. Organisms may reproduce asexually and transmit 100% of their genes instead of 50%. This generates identical genotypes instead of risky new ones and circumvents the problem of finding mates. Why, then, would sexual reproduction have evolved in the face of such extensive costs? This course lays a foundation in evolutionary theory by exploring why sex evolved, the ramifications of sexual reproduction, and the hypotheses of evolutionary models. We will look at the various types of sexual strategies employed throughout the animal kingdom, including humans and our primate ancestors. In addition, we will consider the interactions between our evolved reproductive behaviors and the cultural values we assign to them.
