From Indiana Jones to Tomb Raider, archaeology permeates popular culture. How does this representation of archaeology inform public perceptions of archaeology? In this class, we will be going on a journey exploring productions of archaeologists and archaeology in popular media, in order to better understand how archaeology is viewed in the public eye. We will debunk common tropes in pop culture and pseudoarchaeology, such as Ancient Aliens. We will also be answering the following questions: What do archaeologists really do? How does it relate to the popular culture depiction of them? Some of the fun topics we will be exploring are Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones, The Mummy, Sahara, Timeline, National Treasure, and The Dig.
