The brain of homo sapiens is the result of genetic, ecological, cultural and social factors of both recent and deep history. Neuroanthropology is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the interaction of culture and the human brain. It studies the origin and development of the human brain as a result of our evolutionary history and the life cycle of modern humans. This course will introduce students to the current state of knowledge regarding the intersection of the human brain with human culture. The subject matter includes a diverse array of social, biological, psychological and political topics, including the function of genetics, addiction research, religion, intelligence and the centrality of culture and development to human biology.
