The dual phenomena of poverty and discrimination will be examined in this course, largely through the framework of traditional economic models of human behavior. Various tools of economic analysis are developed and used to analyze the characteristics, root causes and resulting effects of poverty and discrimination, as well as the prescriptive treatments. Course material on poverty focuses on the treatment of inequality in terms of moral arbitrariness and systems of social justice. Course material on discrimination focuses on the roots of discrimination and evaluates the (non)potential of markets to alleviate such practices where irrational. Each topic will be started with module-based summaries and followed by readings, assignments and discussions.
