We all share a natural interest and fascination with oceanography. Some of this interest is generated by summer vacations at the beach, days spent sailing and swimming, and incredible video coverage that features the wonderful wildlife and beauty of the marine world. This class is designed to develop your appreciation and comprehension of the complex nature of the world’s oceans, and the fragility and sensitivity of oceanic resources. In addition, because of the intricate interactions among the oceanic, terrestrial and atmospheric systems, an understanding of the oceans and “how they work” has become increasingly important. As we look towards the next decades, the potential impacts of global change on the oceans are significant. For these reasons, one of the main goals of this course is to help you gain both practical knowledge and an appreciation of the ocean around us; it is my hope that this course will provide the framework from which you will help decide the future of the oceans.
