This course asks how violent geographies, histories, and economies shape lived experiences, realities, and identities across the world. The effect of multiple forms of violence on the development, well-being, and everyday lives of women and children is particularly focused. The intent is to use the seminar as a space to develop a nuanced understanding of the violence in people’s lives in order to effectively reconfigure our approaches to social transformation, justice, and peace. Key topics will include: the creation and perpetuation of multi-layered cultures of violence through colonialism and neo-colonialism resulting in structural violence as well as more direct conflict or war; the impact of global economic policies that enhance inequities within and between societies; the interface of nation-state agendas with global capitalism and imperialism; the intersection of poverty with factors such as gender, race, and ethnicity to create systemic marginalization and violence.
