Can something scary in one language also be eerie in another? This course introduces students to various answers to this question, drawing on a toolkit of theories and practical strategies for translating ghost stories. Through scholarly reading and discussion, as well as translation review and practice, students will gain insights into questions such as: What makes a ghost story bone-chilling? What may get in the way when we read a foreign ghost story? What considerations should be made and what strategies could be used when translating ghost stories? We will focus on ghost stories in literature (e.g., R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps series, Pu Songlin’s Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio) and in media (e.g., podcasts, TV series, films, etc.). Students will work on one translation review and one translation project based on self-selected texts or audiovisuals.
