Translators and interpreters play essential roles in wars and conflicts. In conflict zones, translation work extends far beyond language skills and involves managing asymmetrical power relations in the context of state and non-state violence. This course examines the history of translation and interpretation in different global crises, including Japan, Afghanistan, and Iraq, as well as the ethical, cultural, and political dilemmas facing translators and interpreters in such high-risk working conditions. We consider the practices of interpreters, interpretation as a career, and the ethical codes employed in war conditions and in post-conflict court tribunals. Course materials include history, ethnography, interviews, movies, and documentaries; course requirements include a final essay.
