Recent political protests by groups such as Black Lives Matter have drawn attention to issues of over-policing, mass incarceration, and a discriminatory criminal justice system with regards to race. One slogan that has emerged from these protests is “abolish the police.” This class considers the moral and political justifications for abolishing several related institutions: the police, the criminal justice system, prisons, and racial identity itself. It considers arguments for and against the continuity of these institutions with historical forces of colonialism and racial capitalism. Are the arguments about continuity true, and do they warrant abandoning all attempts at reform? If abandoning reform is not warranted, what normative force might the call for abolition hold independently? Students taking this class will become basically familiar with several methodological approaches to addressing this question including Charles Mills’s Racial Liberalism, Critical Race Theory.
