The question of whether intentionality exists, and if so where it comes from, is one of the perennial questions in western philosophy. Recent advances in the evolution of the capacity for intentionality have provided a definitive answer. In this course we will consider what intentional behavior requires, who is capable of performing it, how it is elicited, and why it is essential to the evolution of the biosphere. Readings will range from definitions and analyses of intentionality through recent discoveries in evolutionary biology and neurobiology and their importance to a comprehensive theory of intentionality. Grades will be based on essays.
