An introduction to the theory and application of geographic information systems. Students will be introduced to the basics of map construction and design, projections and coordinate systems, map scale, raster and vector data, file formats and conversions, and commonly used tools. Students will also be introduced to the GPS systems, Google Earth, and alternate open source GIS tools. Exercises and projects will focus on a variety of issues in the natural sciences and social sciences. Note: this is a redesigned course that replaces GEOL 340.
