This course introduces students to the modern political history of the Middle East. Students will learn the histories and forces behind the formation of all the major nation-states in the region (Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria and the rest of the Gulf States). We will examine the transformation of this region and these states with particular emphasis on it relationship with European and other "Western" powers. Lastly, we will study contemporary issues ranging from the role of Islam, the Arab-Israeli Conflict, oil production and to the rise of local and international terrorism.
