MATH 101 Calculus I 4 class hours, 4 credits. A first course in the calculus of one-variable functions with emphasis on preparing students for bachelor of engineering majors. Topics include: the limit of a function; continuity and differentiability; average and instantaneous rates of change; differentiation of algebraic, trigonometric, exponential, and inverse functions; algebraic and geometric interpretation of a function and its derivatives; optimization; related rate applications; and an introduction to antidifferentiation including the definite integral. All incoming Bachelor of Engineering students will be scheduled for MATH 101 (or higher if awarded transfer credit). A weekly 75-minute recitation aimed at students who need supplementary work in college algebra and trigonometry is available. Incoming students identified by the math placement exam as needing such additional preparation will be required to attend the recitation. Credit will not be given for both this course and MATH 111. Prerequisite: A grade of C- or better in MATH 090. SUNY-GER: Mathematics.
