A survey of United States history from Reconstruction to the present, with emphasis on major events impacting social groups, individuals, and public and private institutions. It covers the major historical events of the late 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries: the legacy of the Civil War and Gilded Age, the rise of the US as a world power, the Progressive Era, the First World War, the Roaring 20s, the Great Depression and the New Deal, the Second World War, the Cold War, 1960s activism, the Vietnam War, the rise of 1980s Conservatism, and the vital question of America's role in the changing modern world.
