This course will explore the impact of school shootings on the development of young adult literature with a focus on this event as a plot device. Students will explore the narrative of school violence as it shapes sociocultural understandings of American education. This class will include discussions on the history of school shootings in the United States, an overview of policy, research studies on school violence, an analysis of three young adult novels, explorations on the shaping of schools today and public perspectives considering school violence. The class will also explore trauma as it relates to both the literature and stakeholders. Focus will be placed on the examination of text and the use of texts in the future classroom. The course will examine the collection development of school violence literature in a 7-12 classroom and/or school library.
