Poetry, fiction, drama, essay, and memoir from the U.S. Civil War to the present. Examines significant works representing realism, naturalism, modernism, and postmodernism in literary technique and responding to the evolution and tensions of a multicultural society, including the labor, immigration, civil rights, feminist, and lesbian-gay experiences. Authors may include Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, Henry James, Charles Chesnutt, W.E.B. Du Bois, Sui Sin Far, Willa Cather, Edith Wharton, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Richard Wright, Tennessee Williams, Ralph Ellison, Gary Soto, August Wilson, Oscar Hijuelos, Louise Erdrich, Toni Morrison, Auidre Lorde, Thorn Gunn, and others.
