This course introduces the student to the relationships between the various levels of structure (electronic; atomic; crystal; microstructure and macrostructure) in a material and the influence of structure on properties and performance. The influence of structure on mechanical; electrical; optical; thermal and magnetic properties are discussed in the context of bonding; defects; crystal; micro and macrostructure. A significant aspect is the emphasis on the raw materials from which fuels; engineering polymers; ceramics and metals are derived. P
