The Information Environment provides an introduction to the multidisciplinary field of information science and a range of information science professions. Through a series of guest speakers, real and virtual field trips, and a variety of contemporary and seminal readings, the course covers topics essential to understanding information science. Topics include the history of information science, the evolution of information concepts and information professions, theories and models of information behavior of individuals and diverse groups, information economics, information technologies and their effect on society, an overview of information organization and knowledge management, informetrics, information and digital literacy, and information policy issues including copyright, censorship, privacy, ethics, and access.
