Forensic anthropology is the only subfield of anthropology that still utilizes the 'race' concept. This is due to the fact that race is an important component of a biological profile of an individual, which is a crucial step when identifying human skeletal remains (alongside sex, age and stature). In this class, we discuss the problems and limitations with using race as an identifier and why it still persists in forensic anthropology. These limitations are demonstrated to students through readings, class discussion, and their own lab analysis of skeletal remains.
