This course explores the cultural context which gave rise to the multimillion-dollar market of superhero films that dominate Hollywood particularly in the last decade. What are the cultural elements contributing to the sudden increase of interest in these franchises? What do these films say about us and our culture? Our main aim will be to develop a deeper understanding of these films as cultural products which have considerable influence in our everyday life. We will analyze some of these films in detail through the lens of psychoanalysis, film studies and critical theory. We will examine both the particular types of desire which lead to the production of these films, and the types of desire these films produce
